Google Earth Imagery Positioning

Perhaps this explains the mismatch we are seeing between the Google Earth imagery and high quality vector data. There does appear to be an issue with image orthorectification or registration.

Update, 2005-12-03: New imagery over Sydney. The problem shown above seems to have been fixed.

  1. I believe some of that has to do with the distortion from the lens of the camera. Usually the farther you move away from the center of the image, the worse it gets. usually when you buy imagery, they correct for this, but I'm guessing Google didn't pay for this.

  2. I prefer to think of it as the onramp into the real world from the some Secret Realm Down Below. (Love that picture.) I've seen other mismatches, but none quite so narratively suggestive.
