Spatial Component of All Data

It is often stated in the geospatial industry that 80% of all data has a spatial component. This seems to be a bit of a self perpetuating meme. Does anyone know where the 80% figure came from, and whether there is any substance behind it? Thanks.

  2. kj,

Thanks. Was it in one of Roger Tomlinson's books, a presentation...?

  3. I have so often heard the `about 40% of the web has a spatial component` thrown around, but that seems a more realistic number to me than 80%.

Again, almost anything can be loosely associated with a location. I tend to believe that 40% of all data ( or web) has a STRONG spatial component to it.

P.S. Using wikipedia as a barometer of data, about 100,000 aricles have been geocoded out of more than couple million.
